The Ocean Pays First: Coral Bleaching Risk Rises as El Niño Redistributes the Sea's Heat

The stranger mechanism: reefs killed by a falling sea

El Niño's second assault on reefs involves no heat at all. In normal years, trade winds pile warm water into the western Pacific like water held at one end of a tilted pan. When the trades weaken, the pan levels: the warm pool relaxes eastward, and western Pacific sea level drops by around 20 cm during strong events while the eastern Pacific rises about 25 cm, per NASA analyses. For atolls and reef flats, 20 centimetres is not an abstraction. Reef flats that normally stay submerged are exposed to air at low tide, and corals die of exposure: Guam's 2014–15 ENSO low tides drove an estimated 53% decline in staghorn Acropora cover.
