BOM is careful with its own caveat, and so should we be: "A strong El Niño signal in the tropical Pacific does not necessarily mean strong impacts on Australia's climate." The correlation is real but not deterministic — 1997–98, among the strongest events on record, brought Australia a milder drought than weaker events have.

The risk ledger for 2026–27

The emergency sector's risk assessment for June 2026 to March 2027 puts the hazards in an explicit order: (1) drought and water shortage, (2) bushfire and grassfire escalation, (3) heat, (4) flood — the last a reminder that convective storms dumping rain on drought-hardened ground can produce flash flooding even in a dry year.

The water numbers frame the first risk. Murray–Darling Basin storage stood at roughly 46% full on 3 June 2026 — a materially thinner buffer than recent wet years provided, with the driest part of the outlook still ahead. Historical calibration

The instructive analogues differ by hazard. For fire, 2019–20 showed what a record positive IOD can unleash even without a strong El Niño behind it. For drought, 2002–03 and 2015–16 brought sharp Murray–Darling stress. Against that, the 1997–98 counterexample keeps forecasts honest. The 2015–16 event also demonstrated the lag structure: impacts concentrated in the spring–summer following the winter ramp-up, which for this cycle means September 2026 through March 2027.

What to watch and when

Three markers through August–September: whether the IOD index holds above +0.4 °C long enough for BOM to call an event; spring rainfall outlooks for the Murray–Darling and the eastern cropping belt; and storage trajectories against that 46% baseline. From October: fire-season declarations, heatwave frequency, and allocation announcements. The oceanic peak is forecast for November 2026–January 2027, placing the highest-risk fire and heat window in the heart of the austral summer. None of this is destiny — El Niño shifts probabilities, and Australia's droughts are never made by one index alone — but the risk assessment's ordering is a reasonable planning brief: prepare for dry first, fire second, heat third, and keep the flood plan in the drawer anyway.
