Sentinel-3C Reaches Orbit, Extending Europe's Ocean Watch Into the 2030s

The instruments and who uses the data

EUMETSAT says Sentinel-3C's instruments track sea level rise and sea ice extent, which the agency calls two of the clearest indicators of climate change. The instruments also measure land and ocean temperature, which EUMETSAT says helps identify heatwaves and gauge how fiercely wildfires burn, and they record the colour of land and water, an input the agency says helps experts pinpoint algal blooms and drought-stressed vegetation.

Sea surface temperature and sea level are the two measurements at the centre of operational ENSO monitoring, and the mission's continuity matters for the long records those assessments rest on.

The data flow to the Copernicus marine, atmosphere, land, climate and emergency services, to national weather and marine services across Europe, and to researchers, businesses and public bodies worldwide, according to EUMETSAT. The agency says teams at EUMETSAT, ESA and the wider Copernicus community work with users through regular coordination groups, building new products on request and adapting how the mission is operated.
