Brazil rarely experiences El Niño as one event. It experiences two: a drought that creeps across the Amazon and the Northeast, and a flood regime that parks itself over the South. With NOAA's July diagnostic giving a 97% chance the current event persists into early spring 2027 and an 81% chance it reaches very strong magnitude (Niño 3.4 ≥ +2.0 °C) in October–December 2026 — weekly Niño 3.4 already stood at +2.1 °C in mid-July — both halves of that dipole are back on the table.
The mechanism: one circulation, two extremes
The driver is the Walker circulation. As the Pacific's warm pool and its rising air migrate east, the compensating descending branch settles over Amazonia and Northeast Brazil, suppressing the convection that delivers their rain. Simultaneously, the subtropical jet strengthens over southern Brazil, Uruguay and northeastern Argentina. What the last cycle did — and what actually caused it
The 2023–24 event supplies both the warning and the attribution discipline. The Amazon endured a record drought: river transport collapsed, crops dried, and hydropower was disrupted across Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela. The UN reported more than 420,000 children affected in the basin. But the causal story matters: World Weather Attribution concluded that climate change — not El Niño — was the main driver of that exceptional drought, with El Niño a contributor. The honest framing for 2026–27 is therefore compound risk: a very strong El Niño superimposed on a basin already made drier and hotter by background warming.
The southern flank delivered its own catastrophe. Between 24 April and 4 May 2024, Rio Grande do Sul received three average months of rain in two weeks; rivers reached historic levels and 90% of the state's municipalities were affected. The fire lag: why 2027 is the year to fear
Drought and fire in the Amazon do not peak together. Vegetation and soils dry through the El Niño year; the flammability debt comes due afterwards. Brazil burned more than 2.3 million hectares in 2016 — roughly four times the 2001–2025 annual average — in the wake of the 2015–16 event, and burned at a comparable scale again in 2024 after the 2023–24 event. But El Niño also has a reliable beneficiary in the grain complex: Argentina.
