The findings were striking. The record-strength El Niño of 1877 did not arrive alone. It was preceded by a strong La Niña in 1875-76 — a cold phase that itself contributed to drying in some regions and primed the Pacific for a violent rebound. And it was amplified by record-warm temperatures in the Indian Ocean, which helped lock in the failure of the Indian monsoon. The historian Mike Davis, in his influential book "Late Victorian Holocausts," argued that the death tolls of 1876-78 were as much the product of political economy as of meteorology. Colonial administrations exported grain from famine-stricken India; relief was late, meagre and conditioned on labor; markets moved food away from those who could not pay. Drought was natural; famine on this scale, Davis contended, was made.

That thesis remains debated in its particulars, but its core insight endures in modern disaster science: El Niño creates hazard, and human institutions determine whether hazard becomes catastrophe. The contrast with recent strong events is instructive — the 2015-16 and 2023-24 El Niños brought severe drought to Ethiopia and southern Africa, yet forecasting, early warning and international response held death tolls to a tiny fraction of the Victorian catastrophe.

The disaster that preceded the science

Perhaps the most poignant aspect of 1877-78 is its timing. When the famines struck, the very name "El Niño" had not yet entered scientific literature — that would come with Captain Carrillo's address in Lima in 1892.
